Review: Powertrain

As a compact SUV, the Ford Escape is a versatile vehicle that's as comfortable commuting to the office as it is hitting the highway for a road trip.

When it's time to get moving, you'll have your choice between three different engines:

  • 2.5L I4: 168 horsepower, 170 lb-ft of torque
  • 1.5L EcoBoost® I4: 179 horsepower, 177 lb-ft of torque
  • 2.0L EcoBoost® I4: 245 horsepower, 275 lb-ft of torque

As you can see, the available 2.0L engine offers an impressive amount of power, which helps you reach a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. All three engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

It comes standard with front-wheel drive, but many local drivers choose to equip their Escape with 4-wheel drive (4WD) to help them tackle wintertime commutes.

Interior

When you enter the cabin of the Ford Escape, you'll find a spacious interior with plenty of amenities, including an available Panoramic Vista Roof® sunroof that spans the length of the cabin.

It also comes standard with the SYNC® Voice Recognition Communication and Entertainment System. This includes Bluetooth® connectivity and voice commands so that you can answer important phone calls without taking your hands off the wheel.

You can also upgrade to the available SYNC® 3 system, which comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display and Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ smartphone integration.

As for passengers, the Ford Escape interior can accommodate a total of five passengers between the first and second rows. Behind the second row, you'll have 34 cubic feet of trunk space. If you fold down the rear seats to create a flat load floor, you can pack in up to 68 cubic feet of cargo.

Trim Levels

We've already mentioned the versatility of the powertrain of the Ford Escape, and this is also evident in the trim levels. It gives you your choice between four different configurations:

  • S
  • SE
  • SEL
  • Titanium

The S trim is the base level and comes with all the standard features, like the SYNC® infotainment system and Autolamp (Automatic On/Off) Headlamp.

The other trim levels build out from there, adding in new features with every configuration. For example, the SE trim level adds the SYNC® 3 infotainment system and heated front seats. The SEL has heated sideview mirrors and the Reverse Sensing System.

The Titanium trim level includes the works, including infotainment features like a Voice-Activated Touchscreen Navigation System with Pinch-to-Zoom Capability and driver-assist features like Enhanced Active Park Assist. The latter feature automatically helps you locate and steer your vehicle into a parallel or perpendicular parking space.
